I mentioned last time that I was in the thick of something, and things are indeed still quite thick. The original deadline, however, was pushed back a week, so although I am still quite busy, I have a bit of breathing room and thought I would post something that I saw the other day. It is a short film that tells the story of Panyee FC. I would explain, but everything you need to know is in that video, which is only five minutes long.
As many people did, I found the film both fascinating and inspiring. But it was especially fascinating for me because I have actually been to Koh Panyee. In fact, my wife and I spent a night there two days before Christmas in 2002 (the part on Koh Panyee starts about two-thirds of the way down that page and continues for a bit on the next page—and if you click on the links in the text you can see some photos we took there). We even saw the new pitch shown in the film—in my travel journal I describe it as “the only real open area in the village.” Little did I know that it was built specifically for that purpose.
Anyway, seeing that film really brought back some good memories. We had a great time when we were in Thailand—it’s hard to believe that it was over eight years ago now that we were there. One of these days I definitely want to make it back.
Since I’m writing, I’d also like to mention that my friend Kevin has made plans to resume his walk and so he has resurrected the Kevin’s Walk website. The Walk has changed—Kevin now plans on traversing the country to raise both funds and awareness for GBM (glioblastoma multiforme—the brain cancer that tragically claimed his mother’s life at the beginning of last year). The walk won’t start until later this year, but you may want to add the site to your bookmarks.
And I think that will do it for now. The slog continues as I trudge toward the inevitable. I do plan on talking about this in more detail when the time comes, as I mentioned in the last note, but that time will not come for another week or so. I don’t know if I’m going to have loads of time to write, but after not writing anything about this for so long here, I’m really dying to get a lot off my chest.
