These are the traditional fireworks mentioned in the previous caption. Wires are strung from the cliffs to the trees on the village side of the river (in fact, they run right behind the mask dance stage—they can be seen in the background of most of the mask dance photos). Bundles of charcoal are hung on the wires, lit, and moved out over the water by pulleys. As the charcoal burns, it gives off the sparks you see here.
