Our next stop on our trip was Dosan Seowon. It’s difficult to translate “seowon” into a single word—basically, it was a place for both scholarship and performing ancestral memorial services for important individuals. This particular seowon honors Yi Hwang, a scholar and civil official of the Joseon Dynasty. It was originally a private school built by Yi Hwang, and it was raised to the status of a seowon after he died. Hyunjin insisted that I have my photo taken here. Something about me being a scholar, so I should take a photo in this scholarly place.
