Danyang, 2006

In late April of 2006, Hyunjin and I took a two-day trip down to Danyang in North Chungcheong Province. The town of Danyang itself is nestled in a bend of the South Han River (that is, the southern end of the Han River, the same river that runs through Seoul) in the shadow of Mt. Sobaek. Our two-day tour of the area involved exploring both below and atop Mt. Sobaek, doing a little caving in Gosu Cave and Ondal Cave on the first day and climbing up Mt. Sobaek on the second day. We also checked out some of the other sights, most notably Lake Chungju, where we took a short boat tour around part of the lake.

I have always been fascinated by caves, but I have no expert knowledge of them or their formations. While writing the captions for this gallery I made extensive use of references I found online, most specifically The Virtual Cave. I also found the information at Showcaves.com quite helpful. Links in the captions go to these sites, and I would recommend exploring them more fully if you are interested in learning more about caves.

This gallery is fitted with larger versions of each photo. To see the enlarged version, simply click on the photo to load a pop-up window.
