The Mud Flats of Gungpyeong-ri

The title of this photo sounds better in Korean: “bundanui hyeonsil,” probably because of the connotations of the word “bundan” in Korean. It means “division,” of course, but when you live in a divided country that simple word evokes a much more complex web of meaning.

The fence here was erected to prevent (or at least discourage, I suppose) North Korean spies from landing their little rubber rafts here and infiltrating the South. I don’t think the problem is as bad as it used to be (I wouldn’t really know, of course), but I doubt the fence will be taken down any time soon, especially with the military installation nearby.
