Gyeongju

This is Cheomseongdae, an observatory that was built in the early 7th century. It is 9.17 meters high, and it is the oldest existing observatory in Asia. It is generally believed that astronomical instruments were placed on the platform at the top of the structure, but some scholars say that the platform was actually an altar. A ladder was used to reach the opening seen in the picture.
