Hawaii, 2014

This the fish and chips, which is what I chose. As you can see, I went for the pan-fried version instead of the usual battered-and-deep-fried. Now, I’ve had fish & chips in various places around the world—all over London, at Ivar’s in Seattle, on Cape Cod, here and there in New Zealand (fush & chups!), etc.—and it would be hard to pick an absolute favorite. That being said, the chips from Eskimo Candy are hands down the best I’ve ever had in a fish & chips combo. Wait, no: these are probably the best chips (fries) I’ve ever had. I realize that this is a very serious pronouncement, and I’m kind of reluctant to make it (because I know it sounds like I am over-hyping them, kind of how like Five Guys fries get over-hyped), but as far as I can remember it is true. They managed to create the ideal chip: crispy and crunchy on the outside, soft and flaky on the inside, and not too oily or greasy. The fish was great, too, although I don’t know if it’s the best I’ve ever had in fish & chips (I think New Zealand probably wins out there). Anyway, it was a good lunch. A happy lunch.
