Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon

This is the southwest ammun, which is translated as “secret gate.” This particular gate leads out onto a long allure (a walkway on top of a wall, and yes, I did have to look that up) with one bastion on either side and a pavilion at the end. The wall and pavilion offer a great view out over the lowlands below.

This gate, however, is unique, in that “secret gates” usually lead outside of the fortress. That being the case, I think either “postern gate” or “sally-port” (the former being intended for pedestrian traffic during peace time and the latter providing defenders with a safe place from which to launch an attack on any besiegers) would be more suitable than the direct translation of “secret gate,” with this gate being the exception.
