Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon
The fortress wall reaches level ground again at Hwaseomun Gate, the west gate. To the left of the gate is another gongsimdon—this is the northwestern gongsimdon. This photo also offers the best view of a non-gated ongseong (the circular wall projecting from the main wall). Here you can see the opening that allows traffic through in peace time, and you can also see how this defensive structure makes a direct assault on the gate impossible.
