Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon
This is me on top of the northeastern gongsimdon, or observation tower. Gongsimdon literally means “empty-hearted tower,” but what makes it distinctive is the walkway that spirals up the inside of the tower to the top. When we first visited Hwaseong Fortress some years ago, none of the gongsimdon were open to the public. We were delighted to find that you can now actually enter the towers and climb up to the top.
On the left is the Eastern Command Post, and this vantage should give you a better idea of the view it commanded.
