Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon

The four main gates of Hwaseong fortress are protected by ongseong, a curved section of wall that extends out of the main wall, making it impossible to directly approach the gate (for example, it would be nearly impossible to effectively bring a battering ram to bear on the gate). The ongseong of this gate—Jangnyongmun Gate, the east gate—and the west gate extend outward from the right of the gate and curve toward the left, leaving a space to pass through. The ongseong of the north and south gates are complete semi-circles connected to the main wall at both ends. These ongseong have a gate in the center.
