Jeju Island Trip: Fall 2005

I know this might seem like an odd shot to include in this gallery, but there is a reason for it being here. The plant seen here is called “yongseollan” in Korean and is related to henequen (same genus, different species). I was very excited to see it because henequen plays an important part in a novel that I am finishing up translating these days, and this is probably the closest I will ever get to this plant. The novel is about the first Korean immigrants to Mexico, who worked as laborers on henequen haciendas, so I just had to take this photo (and a bunch of others that didn’t make it into the gallery, including one of me standing next to the plant).
