Jeju Island Trip: Fall 2005

Here we are at the official marker for Witsae Peak (for those who read Korean, “oreum” is Jeju Island dialect) at 1,700 meters above sea level. It’s actually not too far from here to the top of Mt. Halla and Baengnok Lake, but as you can see here the trail was closed. So we were foiled in our attempt at the summit, but we had a good hike. We found out later that we had chosen the steepest route—we chose it because it was shortest, but I guess it makes sense that the shortest route would be the steepest. Still, it was a great hike, and allowed for some beautiful views, such as the one in the next photograph.
