We set aside one afternoon, possibly on the third day, I think, for a hike on the mainland. We found this chimney in the woods at one end of the trail. This is not an uncommon sight in upstate New York, and I can remember finding chimneys in the woods around my home growing up. Most houses were built of wood, and only the chimneys were made of stone—so when time and weather had eaten at way at the walls and ceiling, only the foundation and chimneys remained.
