2010 Seoul World Lantern Festival

Once on the north side, we made our way back the way we had come to see this colorful lantern (you can see the rear of this lantern in the background of the “wheel of misfortune” photo earlier, and the wheel itself is visible in the lower right of this photo). The large characters on the yellow sign at the bottom say “kakuma daiou” in Japanese and “gak-ma dae-wang” in Korean. I tried to look up this figure, but couldn’t find anything about it. The “ma” character, though, means “demon,” and the last two characters mean “great king,” so it’s a safe bet to say that this is some sort of king of demons. (The first character means “tower” or “pavilion,” but I’m not sure how that works into this.)
