Tokyo, 2006

I don’t think I’ve ever taken a picture of a toilet before, but there is a first time for everything. You’ll probably notice the faucet on the top—after you flush the toilet, the water that fills up the tank passes through this faucet first, eliminating the need to run water separately to wash your hands.

At first I thought this toilet was unique to the ryokan, but I found out later (when visiting my friend Kazuko’s house) that they are pretty common. Tokyo, being a large city, has always had water usage problems, and I think that this is a brilliant step in the right direction. It’s one of those things that you see and wonder why no one ever thought of it before. I think they should be introduced in Seoul.
